October 21, 2024 04:44 PM

Ferozepur : Police Commemoration Day was solemnly observed at the Police Lines in Ferozepur Cantonment, where police officials, civil administration, judiciary members, and the families of martyrs gathered to pay homage to officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Floral tributes were offered at the martyrs' memorial, followed by a two-minute silence to honour their sacrifices.

Led by DSP Karan Sharma, police personnel performed a reverse arms salute as a mark of respect for the fallen officers. Family members of the martyrs were also specially honoured during the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, DIG Ranjit Singh Dhillon highlighted the significance of the day, commemorating the brave officers who sacrificed their lives for the safety and peace of the nation. He recalled the events of October 21, 1959, when 10 Indian policemen were martyred in an ambush by Chinese forces in Ladakh's Hot Springs. In 1960, it was decided that this day would be observed annually across the country to remember these martyrs and other officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The DIG noted that 1,784 police officers from Punjab have made the ultimate sacrifice, including DIGs, SSPs, DSPs, and constables, with 43 of these martyrs hailing from Ferozepur. He emphasized that their bravery will never be forgotten, and their legacy continues to inspire.

SSP Somya Mishra also paid tribute to the martyrs, reflecting on the proud history of the Punjab Police, which has made significant sacrifices to maintain peace, unity, and brotherhood in the state and the nation. "We owe our freedom and peace today to the sacrifices of these brave officers," she said.

Earlier in the event, Ferozepur SP Randhir Kumar read the names of martyrs from various security forces, honouring their memory. The ceremony was attended by District and Sessions Judge, Virinder Aggarwal, CJM Ashok Kumar, PHG Commandant Rajinder Krishan, SP Naveen Kumar, and a large number of police officers, Home Guards, and the families of the martyrs.
