Chandigarh: A delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab, led by State President Aman Arora, met Punjab Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria today to submit a memorandum demanding the immediate removal of Union Home Minister Amit Shah from cabinet. The memorandum was submitted in response to Shah's derogatory remarks against Dr. BR Ambedkar, which AAP strongly condemned as an attack on the architect of the Constitution and a betrayal of democratic values.
Along with Aman Arora, the delegation included minister Harjot Singh Bains, MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, MLA Kulwant Singh, AAP leaders Dr Sunny Ahluwalia, Gurpreet Singh GP and Parminder Goldy.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Aman Arora expressed deep outrage, stating, “It is unacceptable that someone holding a high constitutional post like the Home Minister would make disparaging remarks about Dr. BR Ambedkar, a towering figure in Indian history and the chief architect of our Constitution. This has caused widespread hurt and outrage among Indians, including the people of Punjab, and reflects poorly on the current government's respect for constitutional values.
Arora further highlighted that the Constitution drafted by Dr. Ambedkar is the foundation of Indian democracy, enabling leaders, including the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Chief Ministers, and Governors, to hold constitutional positions. He demanded that Amit Shah be immediately removed from the Union Cabinet for his "low-grade and insulting" remarks. The Governor assured the delegation that the memorandum would be conveyed to the President of India.
Arora said that protests against Amit Shah’s remarks are being organized at district headquarters across Punjab by AAP volunteers and leaders, reflecting the widespread anger and resentment among the public.
The AAP delegation also raised the issue of the ongoing hunger strike by farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite fast for the past 24 days. Arora urged the Governor to intervene and press the Central Government to resume dialogue with Punjab's farmers and their organizations. He stressed that the legitimate demands of the farmers, which were previously promised by the Centre, must be fulfilled without further delay.
He added, “Farmers are the backbone of our nation. The continuous disregard of their demands and the breaking of past promises by the Central Government is a matter of grave concern. Immediate steps must be taken to address their issues and safeguard the health and well-being of Jagjit Singh Dallewal.”
AAP MPs Protests Outside Parliament in Support of Farmers and Jagjit Singh Dallewal
Aam Aadmi Party MPs staged a protest outside Parliament, demanding immediate action from the central government on farmers’ issues. Holding posters of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for 25 days, AAP leaders expressed deep concern over his deteriorating health and criticized the government for its inaction.
Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha urged the Centre to engage with farmers and find a resolution to their demands. Chadha stated, “The nation’s food providers are struggling for their basic rights while the government remains unmoved. Dallewal’s worsening condition highlights the Centre’s apathy towards the farming community.”
AAP MP Pathak accused the BJP-led government of deliberately targeting Punjab’s farmers, stating, “The Centre’s policies reflect enmity towards Punjab’s farmers, who are struggling for their rights. It must stop its hostility and fulfill their legitimate demands.” AAP leaders said that the BJP-led government’s policies reflect hostility towards Punjab’s farmers and called for immediate redressal of their grievances.
