Bilaspur: The Fisheries Department of Himachal Pradesh has intensified its crackdown on illegal fishing activities in Govind Sagar and Koldam reservoirs, ensuring the protection of aquatic life and the livelihood of licensed fishermen. In the 2024-25 period, 228 cases of illegal fishing have been detected, with 192 cases already investigated, resulting in the collection of ₹1,17,250 in penalties. Additionally, illegally caught fish worth ₹32,870 has been seized and auctioned.
The department has also taken firm action against those using prohibited small-size gill nets, which threaten fish populations by catching premature fish. In a major enforcement effort on January 23 and 24, Fisheries Conservation Officer Ajay Kumar and his team seized eight such nets weighing approximately 17 kg, registering seven new cases of illegal fishing. The continuous patrolling of the reservoirs by motorboat teams has ensured strict surveillance and timely action.
Assistant Director of Fisheries Pankaj Thakur warned that the indiscriminate use of illegal nets could lead to a decline in fish production, severely affecting the 37 cooperative fisheries societies in Bilaspur and four in Una. Moreover, the premature capture of fish seeds stocked by the Fisheries Department is jeopardizing the department's conservation efforts, defeating the purpose of fish breeding and restocking programs.
Director and Chief-Warden of Fisheries Vivek Chandel has issued strict orders for regular surprise inspections and immediate legal action against offenders. He emphasized that such measures will enhance fish production, boost the income of local fishermen, and protect the ecological balance of the reservoirs. The Fisheries Department remains committed to enforcing regulations and ensuring sustainable fishing practices for the benefit of the community and the state’s economy.
