Mohali: Amity University Punjab hosted a lecture in the Popular Science Lecture Series, organized under the Science-Society Programmes of NASI, Prayagraj, in collaboration with the Chandigarh Chapter of NASI and the Society for Promotion of Science and Technology in India (SPSTI). The lecture, titled “Fascinating Aspects of Chemistry”, was delivered by the renowned academician and researcher, Prof KK Bhasin, Emeritus Scientist.

In his captivating presentation, Prof. Bhasin took the audience on a journey through the dynamic and often surprising world of chemistry. He began by highlighting the different colours of chemistry, followed by a series of compelling real-world examples that showcased the chemistry all around us. From the humble tip of a pencil to the fascinating transformation of NH4NO3 (ammonium nitrate) from a simple fertilizer to a powerful explosive, Prof Bhasin described how even the most basic molecules have a complex and fascinating story to tell.

Prof Bhasin also presented a live demonstration of a redox reaction using nitrated cotton, illustrating the practical applications of chemistry in everyday life. He further explained how chemistry plays a crucial role in innovations like photochromatic glasses, baby diapers, and the mechanisms behind airbags etc. The lecture also included an inspiring story of how Prof Bhasin's keen observations led to the filing of an international patent. Throughout his talk, Prof Bhasin emphasized the importance of curiosity and innovation in scientific discovery, encouraging students, researchers, and faculty members to remain engaged with the ever-evolving field of chemistry.

The lecture ended with an inspirational quote from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, followed by a vote of thanks by Prof. Anil K. Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, who expressed gratitude to Prof Bhasin for his invaluable contribution to the academic community. The ceremony was further honoured by the presentation of a memento to the distinguished speaker by Prof RK Kohli, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Punjab as a token of love and appreciation from the university.
